What is Reality Mining?

Wiki says"

Reality mining is the collection and analysis of machine-sensed environmental data pertaining to human social behaviour, with the goal of identifying predictable patterns of behaviour. It was declared to be one of the "10 technologies most likely to change the way we live" by Technology Review Magazine.[1]

Reality mining studies human interactions based on the usage of wireless devices such as mobile phones and GPS systems providing a more accurate picture of what people do, where they go, and with whom they communicate with rather than from more subjective sources such as a person's own account. Reality mining is one aspect of digital footprint analysis"

User Behaviour Modelling and Prediction  It is commonly known that although humans have the potential for an extremely high degree of randomness, there exist easily identifiable patterns in every person's life. These patterns can be found on a range of time-scales: from the daily routines of getting out bed, eating lunch, driving home from work, to weekly patterns such as the Saturday afternoon softball games, and even to yearly patterns like seeing family during the holidays in late December. While our ultimate goal is to create a predictive classifier that can learn aspects of a user's life better than a human observer (including the actual user), we begin by building simple mechanisms that can recognize many of the common structures in the user's routine. Learning the structure of individual's routine has already been demonstrated using other modalities; our contribution will be to demonstrate learning of social structures. We begin with a simple model of behaviour in three states: home, work, and elsewhere. The data are obtained from Bluetooth, cell tower, and temporal information collected from the phones. We then incorporate information from static Bluetooth devices (class 1, such as desktop computers), using them as 'cell towers' to identify significant locations and localize the user to a ten meter radius. We show that most users spend a significant amount of time in the presence of static Bluetooth devices, particularly when they don't have cell tower reception (e.g., inside the office building). This makes them an ideal supplement to cell towers for location classification.

How it can be used?

Where it can be used?

Any organization and Government can use it.  It can be used to track the movements of the lead and create a pattern of behaviour to target the customer.  Government can use to profile the citizen to check the validity of criminal records of the citizen.  Insurance companies can use it to profile the client for increasing or decreasing premiums.

Banks can use for profiling the customers for providing loans or for reasons for exact defaulting.

Retail stores can use it to provide additional services to customer to get maximum customer satisfaction.

How it can be used?

Current Level of government policy does not allow to track the customer without his knowledge.  Hence banks/retail stores and insurance companies may need to get the consent of the customer to track him.  It could be in the form of written communication and acceptance from him or  provide him a GPS tracking application in his mobile where he accepts to allow the companies to track his movements.

It can be used to identify the group behaviour, spending and buying patterns of a community or society or a country which can be used to predict the economics and avoid the inflation

Group behaviour pattern could also help to assess the emotional levels of a society in some cases..

What about Privacy of the individual?

In reality, our privacy is already compromised to the maximum level without our knowledge.  Every site you browse (either from your computer or tablet or mobile) over the internet is being tracked by companies like Google and use it for analytical purpose.  In India, the credit card holder details in the entire country is being sold for about 10 USD or 750 INR.  Moreover, we get advertisements in the moble based on our locality. If we are not being tracked, how this can happen.

In reality mining, the customer is being tracked only with his consent, either in the application form he signs with service provider or with the company he is getting in relationship with. (like banks, insurance companies, retails stores, hospitals, etc.)

Advantages for the customer

If he is visiting the stores, he can be treated well at the entrance itself.  In case of emergency, the local doctor or hospitals can locate and reach him quickly and save his life too.
